THE ROAD TO GET THERE…

Thank you so much for inviting Sharath and Abraar to talk to us.

Indeed inviting them was a time well spent with ample of lessons learnt.  I am very grateful for the time and effort they took to share their thoughts and experience with us. Since we are entering this new growth phase on our campus, their comments were very timely.

It was a really interesting and an inspiring session. The enthusiasm with which they spoke was quite contagious.

Abraar commenced the session by introducing himself and talking about his achievements which were remarkably impressive. His confidence reflected in every word that he spoke.

Then he went on to tell us a short anecdote.

Once a person approached a swimming tutor to learn swimming. Then the tutor told that there are two ways to learn how to swim. Firstly I can push you into the pool and teach you how to swim. The other way is we can conduct theory classes where you would be taught all the postures for diving and swimming. Then we will conduct a theory examination on the same and if the question is for 10 marks you can even draw relevant diagrams. Through this Abraar made an attempt to explain how the education system is and sadly we follow the latter procedure of learning.

He then went on to explain that the subjects we learn are the concepts that forms the foundation to build applications like facebook, snapchat, etc. But these concepts are just not enough, we need the technology along with them to build these applications we use today. He added on by telling us that technology changes every now and then but concepts remain the same. Since this technology  is not taught at college we need to master them ourselves. He told us to learn as many languages as possible and develop skills for it. He motivated us to learn things on our own and develop skills.

The session was then taken over by Sharath. He introduced himself and spoke about his engineering life. He told us about how he did not even know what was an array and he kept questioning his friend what it was. But the next semester, he got a really good teacher whose one push in the right direction took him a long way. Then his hard work and determination to learn things made him excel in this field.

His words instilled a willingness to work hard. And in future to stand in the same place and tell my success story to my juniors and to inspire them as he did.  He began on a simple note but ended up motivating the entire crowd around.

He advised us to do side projects and hackathons as that is the best way to learn new things.

That was not the end. They even reverted back and helped us more with learning.  Abraar organised a workshop on machine learning using python. Sharath sent us a mail where he briefed us about 1.Concepts 2.Technology 3.Application. He enlightened us on how important concepts are and shared with us the best possible resources available over the internet so that we get updated with the technology. These resources have enhanced my learning. The way I learn now has changed immensely due to these beneficial suggestions.

I understood that learning concepts for just exam point of view is not enough. In true sense they should be learnt to gain knowledge and should be applied in our daily life. They encouraged us telling it’s easy to build applications if we know our concepts well and master the technology.

The session ended off in the best way. The applause they had received was truly deserving and it showed how much their words had an impact on the young minds around. It was so refreshing to hear wise words from someone who sat on the same benches as we were seated. Their wise counsel and wonderful guidance is helping us leaps and bounds. I am sure every single person present there loved the session.
